The recession may be having an adverse effect on employment across the world, but it appears that some sectors stand a better chance of weathering the financial storm than others.
According to a new report from TechAmerica, the US technology industry suffered only a fraction of the unemployment falls experienced in other sectors in Q4 2008.
Data from TechAmerica, released as part of its 12th annual Cyberstates report, revealed that there was only a 0.6 per cent drop in employment in the tech sector, compared to 1.3 per cent across all private sector employment.
According to the organization, this shows the industry's "resilience compared to the US economy as a whole".
The figures also indicated that over the last four years, over 380,000 jobs have been added to the US economy by the high-tech sector, with the number of new roles steadily increasing since 2005.
T Kendall Hunt, chairman of TechAmerica's Midwest Council, said that the figures reveal how well placed the industry is to cope over the next few months.
"The national data show that the US tech sector has proved remarkably resilient thus far, not seeing net job loss until the fourth quarter of 2008," he explained.© Adfero Ltd
