IT employment in North America is outperforming the general job market, according to new figures.

The National Association of Computer Consultant Businesses (NACCB) has published employment figures for the first quarter of 2009, which disclosed that the industry had shed just 0.23 per cent of its workforce, compared to three per cent across the entire marketplace.

In addition, the IT recruitment analyst revealed in its monthly tracker that just 17,000 jobs were lost in the sector throughout February 2009, which is a marked drop from December's 56,000 job losses.

Mark Roberts, chief executive of NACCB, believes that the IT job "landscape" is "complex".

He said: "There are still pockets of relative strength in IT employment in certain geographic regions, industries, and skill sets.

However, Mr Roberts did indicate that "despite outperforming the general employment market" future IT jobs remain susceptible to a deteriorating macroeconomic environment.
