Technology, automation, disruption --oh my! The workplace is changing rapidly and some job industries are struggling to keep up. New job roles are seemingly appearing out of nowhere, while others are transforming into something unrecognizable. Integration of technology is inevitable in today's workforce - but the question is: how can you make sure you have the right skills to make you desirable to a workforce in the future? Here are five ways you can adapt to change in the workplace successfully:

don't fight it -- integrate

When it comes to changes in the workplace, particularly if there's a new technology that you think might disrupt your field - don’t avoid it. Instead learn it. Study it. Become one with it. Then help introduce that new technology to your company. As the "go-to" expert for that system, you'll train colleagues and become integral to the future direction of the company.

keep your tech skills fresh (or get new ones)

Whether you're a seasoned coder, or someone just feeling a bit behind the times - aim to advance your skills at least a level or two. Luckily there are now some amazing, free resources for you to cut your teeth on. Sign up for an intro website design course at FutureLearn, or check out Alison.com to brush up on your social media skills. Additionally, don't forget that soft skills, regardless of the type of job you're in, remain in high demand.

change your width

What can you do to make your role broader? Can you take on other duties that span other areas of the business? Conversely, are you able to narrow your role and become the go-to expert for that particular area of the company? There are obvious risks in narrowing; you may inadvertently pigeonhole yourself. But if you're certain this skill area will make you an invaluable resource, dive in and become the top dog.

read blogs

Blogs are a great, instantaneous way to stay up-to-date in an age when you need to be navigating and using multiple communications channels to stay up to date with everything. While the information provided at conferences and training can lag behind the curve (especially in fast-paced industries that rely heavily on technology) blogs get updates to you quickly. Compile a list of top blogs in your sector that publish regularly, sign up for notifications, and get updated with the latest news in your field.

love to learn

You'll need to adapt to learning quickly and on the fly. Modern professionals need to be able to grasp complex, creative ideas quickly. A great way to hone these skills is by taking on a hobby or project outside of work. Even if completely unrelated, learn something new. The goal is to become as versatile as possible, constantly learning within a constantly changing environment. After all, you never know what might come in handy.
