Department:

Working in an independent statutory authority within NSW Department of Justice based in the CBD. Their vision is to promote transparency/accountability through better access to information, and a commitment to privacy rights for the people of NSW.

Primary purpose of the role:

To independently review cases, promote compliance with the legislation; support members of the public to exercise their rights under the legislation administered by the department and assist agency compliance with the requirements of the legislation.

Work with Senior Investigation and Review Officers to undertake reviews and investigations of complaints lodged with the IPC.

Key Duties:

  • Undertake casework relating to the legislation administered by the department;
    • collecting information from members of the public and/or agencies;
    • undertaking research;
    • reviewing and analysing documents;
    • interpreting legislation;
    • making findings or recommendations;
    • and preparing routine and complex reports and correspondence.
  • Ensure effective communication with parties;
    • providing information & guidance to the public/agencies about the legislation administered by the department
    • obtaining and clarifying information
    • undertaking the informal resolution of complaints (where appropriate)
  • Managing a high volume caseload and participate in peer review, as appropriate, on any significant, sensitive, or legally complex matters arising from reviews, complaints or investigations.
  • Participate in monitoring and reporting on agency compliance with the legislation administered by the department.

Criteria:

  • Highly desirable: Knowledge of the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 and/or the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 and/or Health Records and Information Privacy Act 2002.
  • Ability to: Interpret and apply legislation/regulations, where there is a need to develop legal and policy precedents to guide decision making.
  • Ability to: meet deadlines within tight timeframes.
  • Ability to: Consult with senior staff across the public sector agencies.
  • Ability to: Work on sensitive and/or controversial issues
