Working within this large FMCG manufacturer, the role of Packaging Technologist will be accountable for delivery of the category packaging program, including Innovation, VIP, Quality and any other packaging initiatives.

  • It will also be responsible for developing and managing delivery of packaging solutions for deployment of innovations and renovations into the category with sustainability top of mind. Will also ensure the level of quality, functionality, cost effectiveness and consumer/shopper/customer appeal are in line with the brand requirements.
  • Will play a key role in delivering packaging cost effectiveness initiatives, supporting supply chain operational issues and ensuring that all artwork meets the needs of the category.
  • Will have effective cross-functional teamwork with Channel activation, Brand, Marketing operations, Supply Chain, Third Party Manufacturers, Supplier Management, external suppliers and other key functions.
  • Able to manage stakeholders and complex projects effectively.
  • Has experience in packaging development and uses this experience to coach, support and develop other team members.

Main tasks

  • Main accountability for all packaging requirements in category locally, working closely with local and regional teams to ensure delivery of portfolio.
  • Local set up of packaging materials meeting regional/global specifications
  • Ensuring technical specifications are in place for all packaging items, including localising regional or global specifications
  • Development of sustainable packaging solutions
  • Organising, conducting and reporting of supplier, factory and transit trials to verify packaging component design, manufacture, packing and distribution
  • Localisation of artworks into locally usable printed packaging materials, and timely approvals through artwork management system
  • Manage and communicate timings to taskforce for all packaging deliverables
  • Development of distribution packaging, including any specific customer requirements such as Retailer Ready Packaging
  • Development of artwork for secondary packaging
  • Providing packaging data for creation of new product codes and maintenance of bills of materials.
  • Provision of data to assist in environmental reporting
  • Providing all relevant data for Gate Documentation in a timely and clear manner
  • Close monitoring of packaging quality issues and working with Supply Chain and regional/global teams to resolve quickly
  • SEAC (Safety) clearance of new contact packaging materials if required
  • Ensure all barcodes meet GS1 and customer requirements
  • Work with Supply Management & Quality on new/alternative supplier development
  • Always aware of new local technologies or innovations, provides local packaging information to category teams
  • Work closely with category to understand plans and packaging input required
  • Proactive member of category team, working closely with project team with a high level of autonomy to deliver category plans
  • May supervise more junior team members or oversee packaging deliverables for team

The ideal candidate should:

  • Be a pro-active problem solver
  • Have the capacity to work autonomously to meet dead-lines
  • Be an excellent communicator (written and oral)
  • Have the ability to influence
  • Have an attention to detail and the capacity to work on a number of projects at the same time
  • Have experience in an FMCG packaging role (min 5-8yrs)
  • Ideally have a science or engineering degree
