job description

We need an Executive Director to lead VSO India Trust, as a part of the global VSO family, implementing and maximising the impact of VSO India Trust’s contribution to overcoming poverty and disadvantage. This will involve not only developing new relationships with strategic partners to shape VSO’s goals in India, but also managing our people and volunteers and being accountable for financial and legal compliances. Importantly, you will be securing resources, raising the profile of VSO India Trust and volunteering within India and representing VSO India Trust to government and international agencies, donors and the corporate sector - championing our values and vision at all times.

About VSO

A brief history. Operating in India continuously since 1994, and before that between 1958 and 1974, VSO has a history of bringing people together to fight poverty through the power of volunteering. In 2015/16, we mobilised close to 50,000 days of community, professionally experienced and youth volunteers to deliver capacity building in secure livelihoods, health, education and disability. Examples of our work include “Enhancing Livelihood Opportunities for Women”, which impacted women from slums from 5 states of India; Employee Volunteering programme which placed over 200 employee volunteers to build capacity of civil society partners; and our SAMADHAN technology innovation for enabling rural citizens to hold the government to account and access public services. Our Governance structure. VSO India Trust was formed in 2009 as an Indian Legal entity and since November 2015, all of VSO’s programmes in India have been managed and operated by VSO India Trust. VSO India Trust, registered under the Indian Trust Act, 1882 and Foreign Contribution Regulation Act, 1976, has a functioning board of trustees. VSO India Trust enjoys a close working relationship with VSO International, which is based in the UK. The relationship is governed by programming, funding and branding agreements as well as a Roles and Responsibilities matrix. Our future. Building on that history, the next decade of VSO in India will be one of focus on bringing development innovations to scale; mobilizing youth as innovators of entrepreneurial solutions to development problems; and forming corporate and public-private partnerships that not only mentor youth but provide frameworks for bringing those innovations to scale – either through business models or transition into public services. At the heart of that will be a focus on girls’ access to education and women’s economic empowerment, specifically benefiting women and girls with disability or women from scheduled groups, particularly in rural India. Paths to Partnerships. Always working in partnerships that build sustainable capacity in local organisations, communities and value chains, VSO is now implementing signature programmes in areas of education, livelihoods and social accountability and is actively looking for development, cross-sector and public private partnerships that support our ambition for innovation and scale. Partnerships will include developing placements for our professionally qualified and experienced Indian national and foreign volunteers, who volunteer from several weeks up to one year and beyond. Partnerships will focus on: • Core corporate value chains, particularly rural agriculture supply chains and the leveraging of technology. • Providing opportunities for groups of Indian youth to innovate solutions to development challenges. • Applying VSO’s Making Markets Work for the Poor approach in rural livelihoods or the leveraging of technology in education as well into a collective Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) model. • Leveraging the skills that exist in abundance in the private sector to build capacity within the development sector in India and overseas, while at the same time delivering business benefit to companies through more socially aware, engaged and connected employees.

VSO is committed to a policy of equal opportunities, values inclusion and gender. We seek to have a diverse workforce. Applications are welcome from people of all origins, ethnicities, gender, age, religions, and disability. Every application will be reviewed against the requirements with the position only.

As an experienced leader, you will have led programmes in challenging and changing environments and be able to use your excellent leadership, negotiation and relationship-building skills to create and implement VSO India’s strategy and work with the Board of Trustees. You will have proven leadership and management skills, including people management skills, strong financial management experience, including budgeting and financial governance. Experience securing significant funding is essential alongside the knowledge of how volunteering contributes to development. There will be substantial travel within the country and occasional travel within Asia and the UK. As well as a competitive salary, the package includes comprehensive health and service benefits.
