The Bacterial Vaccines department is working on the discovery and early development of novel vaccines for bacterial infectious diseases. It strives to address unmet medical needs, such as bacteremia (sepsis) and nosocomial infections. Projects at the Bacterial Vaccines department are primarily structured on scientific and technical collaboration with external biotechnology partners (governmental and industrial) that are innovative leaders in their field.

Job Description:

The Bacterial Vaccines department is recruiting an Assistant Scientist to join the Bacterial Upstream Process Development (USP) team. The job function will be responsible for the experimental preparation and operation of a broad range of biopharmaceutical bacterial USP units. These include cell bank (seeds) preparation, high-throughput and benchtop bioreactor systems, tangential flow filtration, cell disruption and centrifugation. In this function, the Assistant Scientist will interact with multiple Janssen Vaccine & Prevention operational teams and support departments.

The Assistant Scientist USP will apply her/his understanding of scientific principles and professional practices to contribute to the scope of the Upstream Process Development team.

Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Work in multidisciplinary technical and project teams as an USP specialist

  • Preparation of USP experiments, including work instructions, batch records, reactor build-up, media preparation, stock and inventory management.

  • Execution of USP experiments, including cell bank preparation, seed trains, bioreactor operation, early recovery (e.g. tangential flow filtration, cell disruption, centrifugation), and sample management.

  • Execution of USP screening and scaling studies using high-throughput platforms

  • Performing assays for USP in-process-controls, such as SDS-PAGE, Western blot, Bradford, cell viability, metabolite analysis, etc.

  • Support of data analysis, interpretation, and contextual reflection and the operation excellence of the USP facilities, including documentation, maintenance, and cleaning

Who are you?

  • You have a Bachelor in a relevant discipline such as microbiology, biochemistry and bio-engineering.

  • 1-2 years of experience or relevant internships

  • Experience in Bacterial culture and characterization activities at biosafety level 1 and 2, incl. Genetically modified organisms

  • Familiar with the operation of bioreactors on different table scales up to 10L

  • Affinity with MS Office, statistical software, databases, programming sample management and the like

  • Language skills: English (need to have)

  • Flexible & a high affinity for laboratory work
