A leading, well established Autism Specialist Unit in Wakefield is looking to appoint an autism specialist on a long term contract basis until the end of the year, to provide essential and life-changing support to their pupils with ASD. The successful applicant will have experience working with those on the Autistic Spectrum, and have a strong theoretic understanding of the disorder, but more importantly a practical understanding of how best to engage students on the spectrum effectively.

This is a rewarding and fulfilling opportunity to make a difference in these children's lives through an understanding and caring approach to education with a specialist focus. The successful applicant will be required to support children with complex needs, both in the classroom and throughout their school day to effectively engage them with their work and learning. The role will include:
Working both 1:1 and in groups with children in a variety of different classes
De-escalating challenging behaviour students may express and re-directing their focus elsewhere
Liaising with support staff to ensure the smooth running of the class
Supporting the general wellbeing of the students
Monitoring and evaluating learners' learning
Enabling learners to access the curriculum through a variety of techniques
Working with the class teacher and other school staff to best support the students in your care

Experience of working with those on the Autism Spectrum is essential for this role
Team teach training is ideal
The ability to work with learners with various learning difficulties
The ability to manage challenging behaviour calmly and effectively
A desire to encourage children to succeed
A caring, patient and calm personality
An understanding of children with special needs
A flexible approach to education
