The Government of Brunei Darussalam has made raising standards of literacy and numeracy for all pupils a priority. An ambitious new programme will be launched that accelerates the development of literacy and numeracy skills in all schools, ensuring its young people all reach their potential, whether they are planning to enter further or higher education or the employment market.

In association with the Brunei Ministry of Education and beginning January 2017, the project will consist of a 6 month inception phase followed by an implementation phase of 2.5 years.

The goals of the project are:

  • Improved student learning outcomes in literacy and numeracy, reflected in improved PSR results and a target ranking in the top 50 in PISA
  • Improved teacher knowledge and skills related to effective Mathematics and English teaching
  • Improved teacher capacity in curriculum planning and delivery
  • Improved school capacity to support student learning outcomes

The Numeracy Coach is responsible for working collaboratively with teachers in selected Brunei public schools to build capacity and support the improvement of numeracy skills for students.

The Numeracy Coach will:

  • Model effective teaching practices to enhance local teachers’ repertoires
  • Collaborate with teachers in identifying numeracy strategies
  • Engage with teachers in observation, planning, provision of feedback and action research
  • Help teachers analyse student data and use this data to plan
  • Build teachers’ pedagogical content and knowledge
  • Support a whole school approach to numeracy teaching and learning
  • Assist in collecting data for monitoring and evaluation of the numeracy programmes
  • Develop, collect and collate teaching and learning materials for numeracy

Essential qualifications and skills include:

  • A relevant degree from a university in Canada, Australia, Ireland, UK, New Zealand or the USA and to have completed basic and tertiary education in one of these countries
  • Teaching Qualification (PGCE, BEd)
  • At least 5 years’ teaching experience in primary and/or secondary numeracy
  • Demonstrable experience of achieving learning outcomes in numeracy
  • Experience in mentoring, coaching, and delivering professional development programmes to primary and/or secondary school teachers and newly recruited teachers

Desired traits are:

  • Certificate in TEFL/ESL
  • Professional development in numeracy teaching
  • Education experience in an international context
  • Knowledge and/or experience of PISA tests
