A Pupil Referral Unit in Wakefield catering for children who are struggling to access mainstream education due to social-emotional circumstances is seeking as Behaviour Support Worker to join their team.

The provision is for primary school students, some of whom are working at their curriculum level and some of whom are at varying levels. The successful applicant will be confident in supporting students at KS1 and 2 levels, with the aim of facilitating the academic progression as much as possible. The students very often display challenging behaviours and have Social Emotional and Mental Health needs, so the applicant must be able to de-escalate children in crisis and help these students through difficulties. This is a long term position until half term, however, it is likely to be extended to the end of the academic year.

Your role will include:
Establishing constructive relationships with the students
Following positive behaviour plans for each individual child
Supporting the class teacher, teaching assistants and support staff to maintain a positive working environment
Developing a clear understanding of the specific needs of each pupil
Looking after children's physical, emotional, mental and social welfare
Recognising signs of distress in children, offering reassurance and de-escalating crisis situations to the best of your ability
Maintaining a record and providing regular feedback about pupils to the teachers and/or SENCO in order to best track progress
Assisting the school in communicating with parents and carers, using the appropriate approach
Supporting all learners in their curriculum studies and throughout the day


Key skills and experience needed:
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
A commitment to and passion for working with vulnerable children
An ability to build respectful relationships with children
Experience working in a SEND / youth work / sports coaching / community work setting
An ability to manage confrontation and challenging behaviour
An ability to work with learners with various learning difficulties e.g. ADHD or dyslexia
A flexible approach to educating and supporting children
In-date Team Teach certification (if not, training will be provided)
