A leading, well established Autism Specialist Unit in Wakefield is looking to appoint a teaching assistant on a long term contract basis (with the potential to extend), to provide essential and life-changing support to their pupils with learning difficulties. The successful applicant will have experience within SEN settings or specifically with individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis. This is a rewarding and fulfilling opportunity to make a difference in these children's lives through an understanding and caring approach to education with a specialist focus.

The successful applicant will be required to support children both academically and social-emotionally effectively engaging the children throughout the day. The provision caters for students from Primary through to Secondary school, and the students all have a diagnosis of ASD, as well as SEND and associated challenging behaviours. Therefore, experience with ASD, SEND, or team teach (or equivalent) would be ideal.

The role will include:
Providing assistance to the class teacher
Managing small groups of children independently
Working 1:1 with students to help develop their work
Supporting the general well-being of the students in the school
Monitoring and evaluating pupils learning under the guidance of the teacher
Assisting the teachers in the use of relevant management strategies to ensure a purposeful environment for teaching and learning to take place

Experience working with children or adults with ASD is essential
Team teach training is essential for this position
An ability to work with learners with various learning difficulties
A desire to encourage children to succeed
A caring, patient and calm personality
An understanding of children with special needs
