Based out of Birmingham, my client are one of the busiest contractors in the Midlands market right now, with a number of high profile, high value projects around Birmingham City Centre and the West Midlands region.

My client's portfolio includes education, healthcare, and commercial projects; typical projects for which range between £30m-£100m.

The Chief Engineer is entirely responsible for the technical competency of a project. A senior member of the project team, reporting to the Project Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing the timely execution of operations in both the pre-construction and construction phases of the project. Occasionally acting as Project Manager during periods of illness or holiday.

The role requires a strong leader who can manage a team of engineers and works staff to deliver the project. You will manage a number of high level of interfaces between internal departments and external agencies, such as Architects, Engineers, Construction Workers, Sub-contractors, Client agents, Clerk of Works and Site Staff.

You will also identify and mitigate programme risks, identify and address any shortcomings in our processes or systems.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

* Ensuring the works are technically compliant with the contract documents and construction issue specifications and drawings.
* To be responsible for overseeing the effective preparation and maintenance of the programme
* To keep the Project Manager informed of progress to programme and potential areas of risk and opportunity on a daily basis
* Contributing to the procurement process by reviewing and managing the writing of the scopes of works for each package with a particular emphasis on identifying and eradicating package misalignment or potential for uncontrolled growth
* Coordinating design information requirements and assisting in the preparation of the procurement schedule
* To prepare internal and external reports pertaining to the project status
* To oversee all onsite and offsite construction and monitor compliance with building, safety and environmental regulations
* Ensure that all aspects of temporary works are considered and addressed prior to the particular onsite works activity commencement. (This should be managed by the appointed Temporary Works Co-ordinator)
* Ensure that method statements, risk assessments and inspection & test plans (paying particular attention to quality requirements) are reviewed and approved
* Ensure quality construction standards and suitable construction techniques are adopted and maintained in order to provide a defect free end product
* To coordinate responses to queries raised by Insurers, Client, external Stakeholders, Designers, Sub-contractors, Client Representatives and Funders
* Producing and maintaining a project programme covering the Design, Procurement and construction activities. This will typically be through working with the project planner and the rest of the project team
* Ensuring the production of an as built programme
* Ensure client and external body satisfaction with construction process and end product
* To advise on future resource requirements, ensuring timely recruitment of extra staff
* To ensure that client change requests are considered for in pact on programme cost, resources, etc. by working with the design and commercial teams
* To analyse, manage and mitigate risks
* Manage and mentor engineering staff
* To challenge and encourage colleagues to improve processes, efficiencies and programme
* To liaise with all levels of staff within the company, subcontractors and consultants, to ensure the effective delivery of all projects
* Ensuring Company Management System (CMS) records are correctly collated and maintained
* Monitoring progress against programme of the works (on and off site)
* Lead the site team and sub-contractors to maintain the highest possible standard of safety performance at all times and ensure safety is the number one priority of all members of the team
* Ensuring compliance with the CDM regulations

Job Skills & Knowledge:

* Minimum 6-8 years' work experience within the construction industry
* Proven working experience in the management of construction activities
* Must be able to demonstrate a technical, engineering background
* Good knowledge of construction processes, means and methods
* Good knowledge of building products, construction details and relevant rules, regulations and quality standards
* knowledge and understanding of forms of contract, (e.g NEC3, JCT D&B)
* A good understanding of all facets of the construction process
* Familiarity with construction software packages
* Ability to plan and see the bigger picture
* Leadership and human resource management skills
* NEBOSH (Desireable)
* Site Management Safety Training Scheme SMSTS (Desireable)


* Degree in civil or structural engineering, construction management or related field
* Relevant Construction Skills Certificate Card
