Our client an independent statutory body working with a state government department, is seeking a dedicated Senior Solicitor.
With four divisions – Assessment and Reporting, Curriculum, Corporate Services, and Senior Secondary Certificate Reform – the organisation collaborates closely with teachers, schools, government departments, other education sectors, and statutory authorities to benefit all Victorians.
Job Title: Solicitor
- Location: Hybrid – Melbourne CBD + Work from Home (WFH)
- Contract Type: Full-time, Temporary
- Contract Length: 5 months
- Rate: $66 - $80 per hour + super
Role Purpose
The primary purpose of the role is to provide authoritative legal advice on contracts and commercial issues arising in the business operations. This involves drafting tailored and template legal documents, assisting with contract negotiations, advising on various transactions, and maintaining records of contracts. The role also includes providing training to in-house clients and offering legal advice on other matters as needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert legal advice and support on contracts, agreements, licenses, and related commercial legal matters including indemnities, insurance, intellectual property, privacy, risk management, and compliance with statutory obligations.
- Draft and settle contracts and other agreements, advise on variations and modifications, and assist in negotiations with third parties.
- Ensure contracts and agreements reflect legal responsibilities and strategic business objectives, and protect legal interests.
- Develop supporting materials such as guidelines and checklists for employees managing contracts.
- Maintain and update contracts and agreements register and develop internal systems, policies, and procedures for contract management.
- Provide training and guidance to non-legally trained clients, and establish and maintain relationships with stakeholders.
Knowledge & Skills
- Expertise in contract law, contract development, and advice, particularly in the purchase of goods and services, with a proven record of success. Knowledge of Victorian government procurement policies and procedures is also desirable.
- Experience in drafting, settling, negotiating, and advising on contracts and agreements, licences, deeds, and other commercial documents in a regulated environment.
- High-level organisational skills, ability to meet deadlines, and manage competing tasks.
- Strong written communication skills, including experience drafting legal documents and preparing complex briefs, letters, emails, and reports.
- Confident verbal communication skills, capable of handling difficult and sensitive communications and delivering information and training to non-legally trained personnel.
