Location: South Essex Cluster (Basildon, Benfleet, Hawkwell & surrounding areas)

Contract Type: Flexible / Sessional / Full-Time & Part-Time opportunities available

Pay Rate: Competitive hourly rates (commensurate with experience & qualifications)

About the Role

Are you a passionate educator or therapeutic practitioner looking to make a transformative difference in the lives of children and young people outside mainstream education?

We are seeking dedicated Academic & Therapeutic Tutors to deliver tailored, 1-to-1 and small-group support for pupils in our South Essex Cluster.

Our students often present with complex needs, including Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) difficulties, Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), or barriers related to school trauma and anxiety. You will play a pivotal role in re-engaging these learners, building their self-belief, and delivering high-impact academic and therapeutic interventions.

Coverage Area

This role covers a compact, highly accessible geographic cluster across South Essex. Pupils are primarily located within a tight triangle between:

• Basildon
• Benfleet
• Hawkwell

(Travel between locations is minimal, with key hubs situated within 5-12 miles of one another.)

Key Responsibilities

• Tailored Academic Delivery: Plan and deliver engaging, age-appropriate learning sessions aligned with the national curriculum, functional skills, or vocational pathways.
• Therapeutic Engagement: Utilise trauma-informed, therapeutic approaches to help students regulate emotions, develop resilience, and rebuild confidence.
• Individualised Learning Plans (ILPs): Assess pupil needs, monitor progress, and adapt delivery to match each student's unique pace and learning style.
• Safeguarding & Wellbeing: Maintain rigorous safeguarding standards, act as a trusted key professional, and liaise closely with parents, carers, multi-agency teams, and local authorities.
• Progress Tracking: Provide qualitative feedback and session notes to track engagement, emotional development, and academic achievement.

Who We Are Looking For

We welcome applications from qualified teachers, experienced tutors, higher-level teaching assistants (HLTAs), therapeutic mentors, and practitioners with backgrounds in youth work or mental health.

Essential Requirements:

• Demonstrated experience working with children or young people with SEND, SEMH, or complex emotional needs.
• Strong subject knowledge in core academic subjects (English, Maths, Science) or specialist therapeutic mentoring experience.
• Excellent relational and de-escalation skills with a flexible, patient, and empathetic approach.
• Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one registered on the Update Service).
• Ability to travel locally across the South Essex cluster (Basildon, Benfleet, Hawkwell).

Desirable Requirements:

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent therapeutic/coaching qualifications.
• Specialised training in Trauma-Informed Practice, NVR (Non-Violent Resistance), Team Teach, or MAPA/Safety-Pod.

What We Offer

• Competitive Pay: Outstanding hourly rates reflecting your skills and experience.
• Flexible Working: Work hours tailored around your availability and lifestyle.
• Localised Caseload: Minimal driving and clear, regional clustering across South Essex.
• Impactful Work: The opportunity to directly change the educational trajectory of vulnerable young people.
• Continuous Support: Dedicated case management, safeguarding supervision, and access to professional development courses.

How to Apply

If you are driven by inclusion and ready to support pupils who need it most, we would love to hear from you.
