Bored of ordinary structural steel? Would you rather build massive, cinema-scale robotic creatures?
Want a $25,000 investment in your trade, including certified AWS/6GR training?
Looking for an elite indoor facility with an on-site gym, games room, and zero politics?
Want a stable 38-hour week with early afternoon finishes so you can beat the traffic?
If you treat welding as a high-precision craft and want to see the tangible, jaw-dropping results of your labour, this is your next career move. Located in Port Melbourne, our client is a world-renowned creative engineering studio that designs, prototypes, and builds multi-tonne animatronic characters and kinetic attractions for global theme parks, theatre, and major film studios.
The Opportunity: Next-Gen Mechanical Engineering
This is not a "churn and burn" production workshop. You will join a highly specialised fabrication crew, working directly from complex blueprints and 3D models to build the heavy-duty steel skeletons that form the heart of these giant creatures.
Because these systems move and perform in safety-critical environments, every weld must pass rigorous non-destructive testing (including X-ray and ultrasonic inspection). You’ll collaborate closely with mechanical engineers and master makers to bring 3-year long projects to life, with potential opportunities to support onsite installations globally down the track.
The Collective Perks:
Pay Rate: $45 - $50 per hour + Super (Day shift, rate decided by your practical skill).
Elite Upskilling: They will completely fund and support you to pass your AWS (American Welding Society) / 6GR positional qualifications - a $25,000 investment in your trade skills.
Global Exposure: Unique potential for international travel to support the installation of finished builds.
Genuine Balance: A strict 38-hour week with little OT. Flexible starts (6:30 AM or 7:30 AM) mean you finish early.
Unbeatable Culture: Casual dress, on-site gym, vibrant creative spaces, and a diverse workplace where tradespeople are highly respected.
What You Will Do:
Fabricate high-precision, multi-tonne steel structures using MIG, TIG, and ARC (GMAW, GMAW-S, GTAW) processes.
Execute flawless Positional and Procedural welding to stringent international standards.
Read and work accurately from highly complex, multi-layered engineering drawings and weld maps.
Build custom jigs and fixtures to eliminate distortion and maintain millimetre-perfect tolerances.
Utilise workshop equipment (lathes/mills) and support the final mechanical fit-up and assembly.
What You Bring:
The Trade: Cert III Qualification in Fabrication, Welding, or Machining.
The Expertise: Strong background in high-standard steel fabrication (experience in Maritime, Oil & Gas, Pressure Vessels, Aerospace, or Heavy Machinery translates perfectly).
The Drive: A true willingness to train toward and crush an external 6GR weld qualification.
The Test: Confidence to showcase your skill in a practical pipe and box weld test during the interview.
