About the Role
Our client is a statewide network of health services and professionals delivering world-class care for Queensland Kids. They are currently seeking a Capital Accountant to come in and join their South Brisbane team on a 6 month contract with possibility for extension.
Candidates for this position must have:
- Relevant degree in Accounting, Commerce and/or Business
- Associated relevant professional registration (i.e.. CPA, CIMA or ICA qualified) is highly desirable.
- Must have government reporting experience
- Experience in infrastructure sector or large infrastructure departments
- Previous health experience is also considered beneficial but not essential
As the Capital Accountant you will provide leadership and expertise in the management and project accounting functions encompassing operational and capital budget management and forecasting, internal performance reporting and analysis, external reporting and funding assessments in order to effectively support and enhance financial, operational, and clinical performance.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Strategic Financial Advisory: Provide high-level business advice and operational support to managers regarding financial performance, budgeting, and asset accounting. You act as a partner to enhance decision-making and project outcomes across divisions.
- Performance Reporting & Analysis: Deliver accurate, timely, and insightful monthly performance reports. These reports facilitate evidence-based decision-making and identify opportunities for continuous improvement in resource allocation.
- Financial Governance & Compliance: Maintain expert knowledge of legislation, standards (including Activity Based Funding), and internal policies. This ensures the organization meets all regulatory requirements and maintains sound financial integrity.
- Capital & Project Accounting Management: Oversee project accounting structures to ensure the correct classification of operating versus capital expenditure ($OPEX$ vs $CAPEX$). This includes maintaining control templates within the Project Management Framework.
- Business Case & Concept Verification: Conduct financial verification of project briefs and business cases. You are responsible for assessing delivery costs, financial risks, and the long-term impact on "Business as Usual" (BAU) operating budgets post-implementation.
- Asset & Intelligence Coordination: Coordinate monthly expenditure forecasts and project milestones, specifically updating the Capital Intelligence Portal (CIP) and contributing to the Strategic Asset Management Plan (SAMP).
- Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration: Build effective relationships with multi-disciplinary staff through regular site visits and performance review meetings. You bridge the gap between financial requirements and divisional operational needs.
- Budgeting & Forecast Management: Lead the preparation of annual budgets and rolling forecasts in alignment with Department of Health service contracts. This includes identifying financial risks and recommending strategies to maintain budget integrity.
About You
You will be an experienced Capital Accountant with proven experience and reliability in previous positions.
The successful candidate will possess:
- Relevant degree in Accounting, Commerce and/or Business is mandatory.
- Government reporting experience
- Associated relevant professional registration (i.e.. CPA, CIMA or ICA qualified) is highly desirable.
- Relevant management accounting experience within a large complex service organisation is highly desirable.
- Appointment to this position requires certified proof of qualification and registration or membership with the appropriate registration authority or association
- Good broad-based systems exposure including Advanced Excel, BI, and Project Control systems. SAP PM exposure highly regarded.
