Responsibilities
As the lead for North American customs governance, you will ensure the regulatory integrity of all product classifications and declarations. Key duties include:
- Classification Strategy: Lead complex classification analyses using engineering data, specs, and BOMs; establish organizational standards and decision frameworks for HS/HTS codes.
- Validation & Oversight: Review and approve tariff classifications prepared by internal teams or brokers; maintain the client’s centralized product classification master data across ERP and broker systems.
- Regulatory Leadership: Interpret and apply CBSA and CBP regulations regarding valuation, origin, marking, and documentation; monitor global regulatory changes to ensure internal adoption.
- Audit & Risk Management: Lead internal classification audits and defend the client during official CBSA/CBP verifications; identify compliance risks and drive corrective actions and SOP development.
- Broker & Program Management: Manage performance evaluations for US and Canadian brokers; collaborate with consultants on programs and audit broker entries for discrepancies.
Qualifications
- 5–7 years of progressive experience in customs classification and compliance, ideally gained as a customs clearance agent, licensed broker, or customs officer.
- Expert-level knowledge of the Harmonized System (HS/HTS) and proven experience supporting CBSA and/or CBP audits.
- Strong understanding of valuation, origin rules, and post-entry corrections within the context of North American trade.
- Experience with manufactured consumer goods or appliances is preferred.
- A Licensed Customs Broker (Canada or U.S.) or equivalent professional designation (CCS/CTCS) is a significant asset.
- Meticulous attention to detail and the ability to interpret technical engineering data for regulatory compliance.
