The Opportunity

A vital and immensely rewarding opening exists for an experienced QTS English Teacher to lead the delivery of English and communication skills across the school's secondary and post-16 provision. This crucial role involves teaching pupils who have complex and varied Special Educational Needs, which may include:

• Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
• Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD)
• Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD)
• Associated speech, language, and communication needs (e.g., EHCPs).

Your contribution will be central to helping students:

• Develop functional literacy (reading signs, menus, safety instructions).
• Improve expressive and receptive communication using a variety of methods.
• Access the world of literature and media in accessible formats.
• Work towards accredited qualifications where appropriate (e.g., Entry Level, Functional Skills).

You will be instrumental in creating a calm, structured, and literacy-rich classroom environment, managing a strong team of Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) effectively.

Core Responsibilities

• Take full responsibility for planning, preparing, and delivering a highly differentiated and multi-sensory English curriculum tailored to the specific developmental stage, communication level, and learning style of each pupil.
• Adapt lesson content to meet EHCP communication and literacy targets, focusing on individual progress over standardised attainment levels.
• Utilise and integrate various communication supports, such as visual schedules, PECS, Makaton, or AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication), into English lessons to enhance understanding and expression.
• Conduct continuous and detailed assessment on literacy and communication goals, using appropriate tools (e.g., small-step progress trackers) to inform planning and accurately report on development.
• Lead and direct the work of dedicated LSAs, ensuring their support is targeted and effective during literacy activities, reading groups, and communication exercises.
• Collaborate effectively with the Speech and Language Therapist (SaLT) to integrate therapy goals and strategies into the daily English curriculum.
• Maintain accurate, professional records of pupil progress, specific communication aids used, and incidents for EHCP reviews and professional discussions.

Essential Profile

• Possession of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is mandatory, with a relevant English subject specialism being highly desirable.
• Proven experience teaching English to students with complex SEN (such as ASC, SLD, or MLD) within a specialist or highly inclusive setting is essential.
• A genuine understanding of structured teaching and communication techniques for learners who are non-verbal or have significant communication challenges.
• Familiarity with alternative accreditation pathways such as Entry Level Qualifications and Functional Skills in English.
• Expertise in adapting and selecting appropriate texts, media, and resources to maximise accessibility and engagement for pupils with varying needs.
• High levels of patience, creativity, resilience, and flexibility, coupled with a calm and consistent approach to routines.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work confidently and proactively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
• Possession of an Enhanced Child DBS on the update service (or willingness to complete one promptly).
