A Mechanical Fitter specializing in Air Cooled Condenser (ACC) erection is responsible for the precise assembly, alignment, and installation of large-scale cooling systems, typically found in power plants or industrial facilities. This role requires a blend of heavy structural assembly skills and fine mechanical precision.
Core Responsibilities
1. Structural Erection & Assembly
Steel Framework: Assembling and bolting the primary and secondary steel structures that support the heat exchanger bundles.
Fan Bridge Installation: Fitting the fan bridge assembly, including the installation of fan rings, gearboxes, and motor supports.
Bundle Placement: Assisting with the lifting and positioning of finned tube bundles, ensuring they are seated correctly without damaging the delicate aluminum fins.
2. Mechanical Fitting & Alignment
Drive Train Alignment: Precise leveling and alignment of the motor, fluid coupling (if applicable), and gearbox to ensure vibration-free operation.
Blade Pitching: Installing fan blades and manually adjusting the blade pitch angle using protractors to meet specified airflow requirements.
Piping & Ducting: Fitting large-diameter steam ducting (gooseneck) and condensate piping, ensuring all joints and gaskets are vacuum-tight.
3. Maintenance & Tools
Torquing: Executing controlled bolting and torquing sequences on critical structural and pressure-retaining joints.
Precision Measurement: Using calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, and laser alignment tools to verify tolerances.
Blueprint Reading: Interpreting complex isometric drawings, P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams), and manufacturer assembly manuals.
Key Technical Requirements
RequirementDescriptionRigging KnowledgeProficiency in signaling cranes and selecting the correct slings/shackles for heavy lifts.Welding BasicsAbility to perform tack welding or minor grinding to prep surfaces for structural joints.Vacuum IntegrityUnderstanding that ACC systems operate under vacuum; high attention to detail regarding seals is vital.Safety ComplianceExperience working at heights (often 20m–50m) and strict adherence to LOTO (Lock-Out, Tag-Out) procedures.Other Erection Activities (General Fitting)
In addition to ACCs, a fitter in this field may be involved in the erection of:
Boiler Pressure Parts: Fitting headers, water walls, and drum internals.
Cooling Towers: Assembling splash bars, drift eliminators, and distribution headers.
Turbine Auxiliaries: Installing pumps, skids, and oil piping systems.
