Are you an exceptionally proactive, skilled, and dedicated Learning Support Assistant (LSA) or Teaching Assistant (TA) ready to commit fully to empowering young adults with complex SEN as they transition into post-school life?
Do you thrive in a semi-independent, vocational, and community-based setting, focusing on life skills, employment readiness, and independent travel for students aged 16+?
We are seeking a committed, reliable, and experienced full-time individual to join a highly supportive specialist Post-16 provision in the Cambridge area. If you are passionate about helping young adults with SEN achieve maximum independence and secure their best possible futures, we want to hear from you.
The Opportunity
A vital, full-time, and immensely rewarding opening exists for an experienced LSA/TA to work within a well-regarded, specialist Post-16 provision near Cambridge. This crucial role involves supporting young adults (aged 16-19+) who have an Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP) encompassing:
- Moderate to Severe Learning Difficulties (MLD/SLD)
- Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
- Communication, social, and functional challenges
Your contribution will be central to helping students engage meaningfully with a life skills and vocational curriculum. This includes supporting them with budgeting, cooking, job seeking, accessing public transport, and managing social interactions required for independent living. You will work within classrooms, dedicated workshops, and crucially, out in the local community.
Core Responsibilities
- Provide tailored, direct support to named students, meticulously implementing their EHCP Transition Targets, focusing heavily on independence and functional skills outcomes.
- Facilitate and support students during community-based learning activities, including trips to local shops, leisure centres, and workplaces, ensuring their safety and promoting appropriate social behaviour.
- Support the delivery of vocational skills and life skills lessons (e.g., Food Technology, travel training, personal finance), ensuring all tasks are highly differentiated and accessible.
- Act as a key worker and reliable mentor, providing guidance on emotional regulation, self-advocacy, and problem-solving skills necessary for life beyond school.
- Assist students in managing their use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) methods or other specific supports during work experience placements or community interactions.
- Maintain accurate, detailed records of student engagement, independence milestones, behavioural incidents, and functional skills progress for EHCP reviews and transition planning.
- Collaborate effectively with teachers, external job coaches, social workers, and parents/carers to ensure a holistic approach to the student's preparation for adulthood.
- Assist pupils with personal care needs where required, maintaining dignity and professional standards at all times.
Essential Profile
- Previous, demonstrable support experience (paid or voluntary) working with young adults (16+) with SEN, particularly focusing on transition, life skills, or vocational support.
- A proven track record of promoting independence and self-advocacy in young people with learning difficulties or ASC.
- Confidence and willingness to support students out in the community (e.g., travel training, shopping, work experience placements) while managing risk effectively.
- Strong skills in positive behaviour management and de-escalation suitable for working with older students who may exhibit anxiety or social frustration.
- High levels of professionalism, reliability (essential for a full-time role), patience, and initiative.
- Excellent communication skills, particularly the ability to model appropriate communication for social and workplace interactions.
- Possession of an Enhanced Child DBS on the update service (or willingness to complete one promptly).
Benefits of Joining Us
- A competitive daily pay rate of £90 - £95, reflective of your specialist experience in the post-16 transition phase.
- Guaranteed full-time hours in an immensely rewarding provision near Cambridge, focusing on tangible real-world outcomes.
