Are you an exceptionally creative and fully qualified (QTS) Secondary Maths Teacher with specialist experience or a deep commitment to teaching students within a dedicated Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) or Special Educational Needs (SEN) setting?
Do you thrive on the challenge of making functional numeracy, problem-solving, and practical Maths skills accessible and relevant to pupils with complex learning, communication, and emotional needs?
We are seeking a proactive, compassionate, and committed specialist Maths Teacher to join a highly supportive, dedicated, and specialist SEN school community in the Peterborough area. If you are passionate about using Maths to build confidence, enhance daily living skills, and foster logical thinking in vulnerable learners, we want to hear from you.
The Opportunity
A vital and immensely rewarding opening exists for an experienced QTS Maths Teacher to lead the delivery of Maths and numeracy skills across the school's secondary and post-16 provision. This crucial role involves teaching pupils who have complex and varied Special Educational Needs, which may include:
- Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) difficulties
- Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
- Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD)
- Associated dyscalculia and processing challenges (e.g., EHCPs).
Your contribution will be central to helping students:
- Develop functional numeracy (handling money, time-telling, measuring ingredients).
- Improve logical thinking and problem-solving in real-world contexts.
- Access mathematical concepts through concrete, practical, and multi-sensory approaches.
- Work towards accredited qualifications where appropriate (e.g., Entry Level, Functional Skills, or GCSE where possible).
You will be instrumental in creating a calm, structured, and hands-on classroom environment, managing a strong team of Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) effectively.
Core Responsibilities
- Take full responsibility for planning, preparing, and delivering a highly differentiated and multi-sensory Maths curriculum tailored to the specific developmental stage, communication level, and learning style of each pupil.
- Adapt lesson content to meet EHCP numeracy and functional goals, focusing on individual progress, particularly using P-Scales or other relevant small-step progress measures.
- Utilise and integrate various teaching aids, such as concrete manipulatives, visual supports, and real-life scenarios, into Maths lessons to enhance practical understanding.
- Conduct continuous and detailed assessment on numeracy and functional goals, using appropriate tools to inform planning and accurately report on development.
- Lead and direct the work of dedicated LSAs, ensuring their support is targeted and effective during practical tasks and numerical activities.
- Collaborate effectively with the SENCO and Pastoral Team to address barriers to learning and integrate Maths concepts with functional/life skills curricula.
- Maintain accurate, professional records of pupil progress, specific supports used, and any incidents for EHCP reviews and professional discussions.
Essential Profile
- Possession of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is mandatory, with a relevant Maths subject specialism being highly desirable.
- Proven experience teaching Maths to students with complex SEN (such as SEMH, ASC, or MLD) within a specialist or highly inclusive setting is essential.
- A genuine understanding of structured teaching and concrete approaches required for learners with significant processing difficulties (e.g., dyscalculia).
- Familiarity with alternative accreditation pathways such as Entry Level Qualifications and Functional Skills in Maths.
- Expertise in adapting and selecting appropriate resources to maximise accessibility and practical engagement for pupils with emotional and learning barriers.
- High levels of patience, creativity, resilience, and flexibility, coupled with a calm and therapeutic approach to behaviour management.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work confidently and proactively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Possession of an Enhanced Child DBS on the update service (or willingness to complete one promptly).
Benefits of Joining Us
- A competitive daily pay rate of £150 - £220, reflective of your QTS status and specialist experience (equivalent to SEN scale points).
- The opportunity to work in a well-supported, specialist SEN school in Peterborough that prioritises staff well-being, collaborative practice, and specialist training.
- Access to accredited training in specific areas such as Trauma-Informed Practice, functional numeracy teaching, and ASC best practice.
- A profoundly rewarding role where you will build confidence and essential life skills through mathematical understanding.
- £300 Refer A Friend scheme (terms apply).
