The Opportunity
This is a vital, full-time, and deeply fulfilling teaching post for a qualified professional (QTS) to take charge of a key class group. The role involves teaching pupils across a specific phase (e.g., Primary or Secondary) who require expert support due to significant and diverse Special Educational Needs, including:
- Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and complex communication needs
- Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD) and/or Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD)
- Students with sensory integration challenges and co-occurring physical needs.
The successful candidate will be the instructional leader, responsible for transforming EHCP targets into successful, daily learning experiences. You will be fully supported by an experienced team of Learning Support Assistants and collaborate with on-site therapists.
Key Responsibilities of the SEN Teacher
- Curriculum Mastery: Plan, prepare, and deliver an exceptionally differentiated curriculum that is multi-sensory and specifically aligned with the detailed developmental profiles and EHCPs of all pupils in the class.
- Assessment & Reporting: Implement continuous, precise assessment focusing on tracking 'small steps' of progress (using relevant metrics) to inform future planning and report accurately to parents and external professionals.
- Behaviour and Environment Management: Establish and consistently maintain a highly structured, emotionally regulated, and positive classroom climate, utilizing specialised approaches (e.g., structured teaching, visual supports).
- Team Leadership: Effectively deploy, supervise, and mentor the class team of Teaching Assistants (TAs) and LSAs, ensuring high-quality, targeted student support at all times.
- Inter-Agency Collaboration: Work seamlessly with Speech & Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and other specialists to fully integrate therapeutic goals into the daily teaching routine.
- Stakeholder Communication: Maintain open, professional dialogue with parents/carers and participate in statutory reviews, advocating for the pupils' needs.
Essential Requirements for the Role
- Mandatory Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
- Significant, verifiable experience teaching pupils with complex SEN within a specialist school or resource provision.
- Demonstrable expertise in translating complex needs (e.g., communication, sensory, behavioural) into practical, successful classroom strategies.
- High levels of personal resilience, dedication, patience, and the ability to maintain consistency and calm under pressure.
- Exceptional leadership and communication skills, vital for directing a support team and liaising with professional services.
- A strong safeguarding commitment and possession of an Enhanced DBS on the update service (or willingness to complete one).
