Soham
Are you an exceptionally compassionate and skilled Learning Support Assistant (LSA) or Teaching Assistant (TA) who specialises in supporting students with communication and interaction needs?
Do you have experience using Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) methods (like Makaton or PECS) and are passionate about helping students find their voice and build strong social skills?
We are seeking a proactive and dedicated individual to join a highly supportive school community in the Soham area. If you are committed to facilitating meaningful communication and promoting inclusion for every pupil, this role is an excellent fit.
The Role
A brilliant and fulfilling opportunity is available for a dedicated SEN Learning Support Assistant to work within a highly inclusive school setting near Soham. This role is focused on providing targeted support to pupils primarily diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and associated Speech, Language, and Communication Needs (SLCN).
Your expertise will be crucial in creating a low-arousal, structured environment where students feel safe and understood. You will be instrumental in helping students navigate the social demands of the school day, understand non-verbal cues, and express their needs effectively. You will typically work on a 1:1 or small group basis within the classroom or a dedicated resource base.
Core Responsibilities
- Provide specialist 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with ASC and SLCN, diligently following their individual communication, social, and academic targets.
- Implement and model AAC strategies (e.g., Makaton signs, PECS exchanges, or communication boards) to support non-verbal or minimally verbal learners.
- Assist the class teacher in using visual supports (like Now and Next boards or timetables) and structured teaching methodologies (like TEACCH) to enhance predictability and reduce anxiety.
- Help pupils understand and navigate social situations, facilitating positive interactions with peers and managing sensory regulation needs proactively.
- Work closely with the school's Speech and Language Therapist (SaLT) to deliver prescribed therapy programmes within the classroom setting.
- Accurately track and record communication progress, noting breakthroughs and challenges to contribute to formal reviews and planning.
- Maintain a calm, consistent, and patient approach, understanding the sensory and processing differences often experienced by students with ASC.
Essential Profile
- Previous professional experience supporting children or young people with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and/or significant Speech, Language, and Communication Needs (SLCN).
- Proven practical experience in using or implementing Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) methods (e.g., Makaton, PECS, or communication devices).
- Strong understanding of structured teaching principles (e.g., use of visual timetables, clear work systems) and their benefit for autistic learners.
- Exceptional patience, empathy, and consistency, with a commitment to maintaining a calm and predictable working environment.
- Excellent ability to work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team, including therapists and external professionals.
- Possession of an Enhanced Child DBS on the update service (or willingness to complete one promptly).
Benefits of Joining Us
- A competitive daily pay rate of £90 - £95, commensurate with your specialist communication experience.
- Placement within a very supportive and inclusive school setting in the Soham area, with a strong focus on specialist provision.
- Access to ongoing, specialist CPD in Autism awareness, sensory integration, and advanced communication techniques.
- A deeply fulfilling role where your expertise directly translates into a child's ability to communicate, learn, and engage.
- £300 Refer A Friend scheme (terms apply).
