The Opportunity
We are seeking an exceptional Learning Mentor (Level 3) to provide specialised behaviour, guidance, and in-class support for pupils in our partner Chorlton based Secondary Pupil Referral Unit (PRU). This is a critical Grade 5 role requiring a professional who can expertly overcome barriers to learning, provide proactive pastoral care, and manage complex social and emotional needs.
About the School (Secondary PRU)
They are an established Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) serving vulnerable Key Stage 3 students who have been excluded from mainstream education or who present with significant Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) and behavioural difficulties. Our mission is to provide consistent support, dynamic learning programs, and positive intervention strategies to ensure students achieve positive outcomes and are successfully prepared for their next educational placement.
Key Duties & Responsibilities (Specialist Support & Guidance):
Direct Behaviour Guidance & Mentoring: Provide pastoral support, supervise excluded pupils, and develop 1:1 mentoring arrangements. Challenge and motivate pupils to promote and reinforce self-esteem and independence in their learning and attendance.
Complex Needs & ILPs: Work with groups to deliver therapy and programmes of work, including the implementation of Individual Learning Plans (ILPs). Participate in comprehensive pupil assessment to determine those in need of particular help.
Attendance & Integration: Assist in the development, implementation, and monitoring of systems relating to attendance and integration. Support pupils on integration placements in mainstream schools or colleges and on work experience placements.
Welfare & Health: Attend to pupils' personal needs, including minor first aid and hygiene, and provide advice on pastoral, social, and health development.
Class Cover & Planning: A Level 3 Learning Mentor may be called upon to provide cover for whole classes (e.g., short-term teacher absence), which includes requirements for planning, preparation, assessment, and reporting.
External Liaison: Establish constructive relationships and communicate with other agencies/professionals (e.g., therapists, medical staff, parents/carers) to support pupil progress.
Person Specification (Level 3 Specialist Requirements)
Minimum Requirements:
UK School Experience: A minimum of six months recent experience working within a UK school environment.
Specialist Experience: Extensive experience of working with children/young people with behavioural difficulties and those with communication, severe, profound, or complex learning difficulties.
Qualifications: NVQ Level 3 for Teaching Assistants or an equivalent qualification and/or experience (e.g., Youth Work qualification).
Core Skills: Numeracy/literacy skills (at a level equivalent to NQF Level 2).
Compliance: Willingness to consent to and apply for an enhanced disclosure to a DBS check.
Core Competencies (Behaviour/Guidance/HLTA Standards):
Advanced Knowledge: Full working knowledge and understanding of national curriculum, strategic processes, and barriers to learning, including behaviour management strategies.
Proactive Planning: Ability to plan effective actions for pupils at risk of underachieving and self-evaluate learning needs.
HLTA Readiness: Willingness and ability to undertake Senior Learning Mentor/HLTA Level responsibilities, including the more demanding aspects of specified teaching work.
Engagement: Experience of youth work or other aspects of engagement work.
Personal Style: Tact and diplomacy in all interpersonal relationships, self-motivation, flexibility, and commitment to ensuring support is appropriate to the diverse needs of the pupils.
