Independent Advisor (Special Measures - First Nations)

- Tenure: Part-Time (0.6 FTE / 3 days per week), Labour Hire up to 6 months

About the Opportunity
The Independent Advisory Council (IAC) gives critical, independent expert advice directly to the Board to bring the real-world experiences of participants, families, and carers into the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
As the First Nations Independent Advisor, you will play a vital role in supporting the IAC's First Nations Reference Group. Operating with considerable independence, you will combine your deep cultural knowledge and sector expertise to help shape systemic improvements and build capacity within the community.
What You Will Do (Key Responsibilities)
Reporting directly to the IAC Principal Member, your work will directly influence government advice and community empowerment. Duties include:
- Drafting Expert Advice: Write high-quality, formal pieces of advice, plain-English discussion papers, and reports for the Board and external reviews.
- Cultivating Cultural Safety: Support and maintain a culturally safe space for First Nations reference group members.
- Community Capacity Building: Lead quarterly mentoring and capability sessions for members (e.g., navigating professional conduct, representing community accurately, and raising diverse points of view).
- Strategic Collaboration: Work alongside two other Independent Advisors and the IAC Secretariat to facilitate focus groups and research that informs the annual IAC workplan.
- Meeting & Relationship Management: Attend reference group meetings (including hybrid and virtual sessions) and support the Principal Member in high-level stakeholder discussions.
What We Are Looking For
Essential Requirements:
- Community Connection & Knowledge: Deep understanding of the First Nations community and the unique intersecting lived experiences of First Nations people with disabilities.
- NDIS Expertise: Solid knowledge of how the NDIS works, specifically its strengths, barriers, and operational realities for First Nations participants.
Desirable Skills & Experience:
- Policy & Communication: Experience writing strategic advice, papers, or reports for government organisations using clear, accessible, and plain English.
- Relationship Building: Proven capability to form, grow, and maintain strong professional and community relationships across diverse groups.
- Adaptability & Critical Thinking: The ability to navigate changing legislative, political, or operational environments and apply professional judgment to manage risks.
- Qualifications: Relevant qualifications in disability, health, social sciences, or public policy are highly regarded.
