About the Opportunity
Are you an accomplished fire protection engineering specialist ready to step into a high-visibility, national leadership seat? This premier, progressive multi-disciplinary building services consultancy is hunting for a dynamic Senior Fire Services Engineer to champion our national fire engineering division.
In this role, you will command autonomy over complex project lifecycles, cultivate trusted partnerships with top-tier clients, and drive technical excellence across both localised onshore and offshore engineering and drafting teams. Reporting directly to the Managing Director, you will act as a critical design guardian and mentor, transforming intricate architectural concepts into highly compliant, safe reality.
Overall ResponsibilitiesDesign Champion: Manage and deliver world-class fire protection designs seamlessly across all project phases.
People & Performance Leader: Mentor, coach, and support team members to cultivate sustained technical growth and delivery consistency.
Quality Guardian: Oversee rigorous QA/QC frameworks to maintain exceptional design quality, safety, and code compliance.
Strategic Partner: Cultivate robust, collaborative relationships with clients, key external stakeholders, and internal multi-disciplinary teams.
Agile Technical Expert: Provide sharp, ad-hoc technical design input where required to keep complex projects moving.
Technical Excellence & Compliance
Lead and critically review complex fire protection engineering designs, performing independent design checks and arithmetical verifications.
Ensure all engineering deliverables flawlessly comply with the National Construction Code (NCC), relevant Australian Standards, and local authority requirements across all operating regions.
Prepare and oversee concept designs, detailed documentation, and tender/construction packages aligned perfectly with client briefs.
Harness value engineering principles to unlock cost-effective, innovative solutions without compromising fire safety, asset integrity, or compliance.
Actively liaise with local fire departments and regulatory authorities where required.
Leadership & Team Development
Provide inspiring technical leadership to both onshore and offshore engineering teams, ensuring absolute accuracy and efficiency in outputs.
Mentor, coach, and guide engineers, supporting their professional growth and actively fostering a high-performance team culture.
Drive team performance to meet project deadlines through structured planning, clear delegation, and effective supervision.
Project, Client & Quality Governance
Lead coordination with other engineering disciplines (mechanical, electrical, hydraulic) and external consultants to deliver fully integrated building services solutions.
Manage and participate in client meetings, proactively preparing and issuing agendas, meticulous minutes, and progress reports.
Take total responsibility for the quality, accuracy, and consistency of all fire protection engineering outputs.
Oversee contractual alignment by thoroughly understanding signed fee proposals; proactively identify, document, and negotiate variations when project scopes shift.
Update the internal Job Management System daily with project progress, milestones, and billable hours.
Complete comprehensive design checklists across disciplines and author valuable "lessons learnt" reviews post-project completion.
Client & Stakeholder Management
Take ownership of all client-facing correspondence, driving clear, successful outcomes for all invested parties.
Maintain tight oversight of all documentation issued to or received from clients, architects, structural engineers, and other consultants.
Build trust with clients by consolidating and clarifying RFIs and Technical Queries (TQs) across all disciplines before client issuance, avoiding fragmented communication.
Team Leadership & Coordination
Organise and chair project kick-off meetings to ensure all team members clearly understand project scopes, deliverables, and expectations.
Provide direction and accountability through ongoing leadership of internal and external meetings, ensuring outcomes are documented and followed up.
Scope & Commercial Oversight
Ensure the delivery team fully understands the parameters defined under signed fee proposals, capturing out-of-scope items swiftly as variations.
Negotiate and manage project milestones and deliverables with both the client and internal staff to maintain perfect alignment.
Monitor project timelines, budgets, and overall documentation standards to ensure absolute compliance and premium client satisfaction.
Quality & Compliance
Take responsibility for overall project compliance, documentation standards, and quality assurance (QA).
Ensure deliverables meet the required codes, standards, and company procedures.
Required Qualifications & Experience
Education: Tertiary qualifications in Fire Protection Engineering (Minimum: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering).
Professional Standings: Formal CPEng (Chartered Professional Engineer) and NER (National Engineering Register) registrations are highly regarded.
Tenure: A minimum of 5+ years of post-graduate experience spent actively working within a recognised building services design consultancy.
Leadership History: Proven experience in managing, coaching, mentoring, and driving accountability within engineering teams.
Technical Toolkit & Core Skills
Design Mastery: Highly proficient in performing comprehensive fire services designs, with specialised expertise in fire protection safety systems including sprinklers and fire alarms.
Project Controls: Strong project management and multi-disciplinary services coordination capabilities.
Communication: Refined written and verbal communication skills, with excellent analytical abilities and high attention to detail.
Agility: Strong time management, prioritisation, and organisational skills to handle multiple tasks and manage multiple disciplines simultaneously.
