If you want to leave a legacy by setting best-practice standards from inception, this is the project for you.
Job Details
- Role Type: Permanent, Full-time
- Salary: Highly competitive, aligned with experience
- Location: Pokeno, Waikato
What You'll Do
You will be the backbone of safety on-site, providing both technical and operational support to the Construction Manager. This is a delivery-focused role and you’ll have the freedom to drive improvements and the authority to ensure this facility is built to the highest New Zealand standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure the technical design of the infrastructure - placement of stops, clearances, and fire protection is built-in from day one.
- Lead project safety meetings, conduct inductions, and supervise contractor/sub-contractor performance to ensure strict compliance.
- Lead risk identification and mitigation in line with NZ legislation; review and approve construction safety plans and task analyses.
- Act as a mentor on-site, correcting deviations and fostering a proactive safety culture through "street-smart" communication.
- Maintain accurate HSE data and prepare high-level monthly reports for the project leadership team.
About You
We need someone with the technical polish for engineering design but the grit to command respect on a busy construction site. You are a resilient, strong-minded professional who can navigate high-pressure situations with confidence.
To succeed in this role:
- 3–5 years of New Zealand experience as a Safety Engineer within the construction industry.
- A Bachelor’s degree, Diploma, or Certificate in OHS, Engineering, or Environmental Science.
- Proven experience in Safety in Design and a deep understanding of NZ health and safety legislation.
- You can hold your ground in difficult conversations and mentor senior leaders to be better safety managers.
- You are self-motivated and excited by the challenge of setting up systems from scratch rather than following a pre-existing manual.
