About the Opportunity
We are seeking a high-performing Mechanical Capability Manager to lead a team of skilled engineering and technical professionals supporting critical Australian Defence programs. Positioned within a major naval sustainment environment, this operational leadership role drives repair, maintenance, and technical support services for major and minor fleet units across Australia.

Key Responsibilities
- Operational Leadership: Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team across integrated workshops, fostering a culture of safety, quality, and collaboration.
- Capability & Governance: Oversee repair, maintenance, and technical execution across mechanical, propulsion, marine, and weapon systems across diverse naval platforms.
- Operational Excellence: Apply LEAN and Short Interval Management principles to optimise workshop workflows, ensure trade compliance, and drive continuous improvement.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Act as a key technical contact for enterprise partners and defence stakeholders, delivering sustainable technical solutions on schedule and within budget.
- Workforce Development: Guide career progression, technical training, and capability building across all mechanical engineering disciplines.
About You
You are a confident, hands-on leader with a strong technical foundation and a proven ability to lead multidisciplinary engineering or maintenance teams in complex, high-reliability environments.
- Experience: 10+ years leading technical, mechanical, or workshop teams (defence, heavy industry, or marine background highly regarded).
- Technical Qualifications: Mechanical engineering or trade qualification, with a Diploma in Leadership and Management (or willingness to obtain within 12 months).
- Methodologies: Demonstrated exposure to LEAN, continuous improvement, and safety management frameworks (OH&S).
- Site Readiness: Valid Class C driver’s license and physical ability to work in shipboard environments (ladders, confined spaces, and maritime assets).
- Citizenship Requirement: Must be an Australian Citizen eligible to obtain and maintain an Australian Government Security Clearance.
