The Opportunity
A valuable, part-time, ongoing opportunity exists for a skilled Teaching Assistant to work within a well-regarded specialist provision near Bury St Edmunds. The role will involve consistent support across agreed days or sessions, assisting pupils who present with complex and varied Special Educational Needs, such as:
- Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
- Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD)
- Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD)
- Sensory processing and communication challenges.
Your vital contribution will be focused on providing crucial support, working in either a 1:1 capacity or with small groups, enabling pupils to access a highly personalised curriculum and meet their individual targets outlined in their EHCPs.
Core Responsibilities
- Provide targeted 1:1 or small group assistance to pupils with complex SEN during scheduled sessions, focusing on planned learning objectives and personal goals.
- Support the Class Teacher in preparing and adapting differentiated, multi-sensory resources relevant to the part-time timetable.
- Assist in the implementation of established communication strategies, such as PECS, Makaton, or visual supports, to ensure predictable routines.
- Actively support the positive management of student behaviour and contribute to a calm, predictable learning environment.
- Assist with personal care, manual handling, and mobility support as required during your contracted hours (training will be provided).
- Maintain accurate records of pupil engagement, progress, and interventions during your shift, reporting promptly to the Class Teacher.
- Uphold the school's commitment to safeguarding and contributing positively to the multidisciplinary team.
Essential Profile
- Proven experience supporting children or young people with complex Special Educational Needs is highly desirable.
- An understanding of, or a strong willingness to learn, specialist intervention techniques and structured learning environments.
- Exceptional levels of patience, reliability, empathy, and consistency, suitable for working with vulnerable pupils.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team.
- Flexibility and reliability to commit to set part-time hours/days.
- Possession of an Enhanced Child DBS on the update service (or willingness to complete one promptly).
