Ipswich
Can you explain the forces of physics through a game of football, or bring the Bronze Age to life through a sensory dig?
We are seeking a versatile and creative Qualified Teacher (QTS) with a passion for both Science and Humanities to join our partner SEN School in Ipswich. In a specialist setting, the boundaries between subjects often blur; we need a teacher who can lead a "Discovery-based" curriculum for KS3 and KS4 students with Autism (ASC) and Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD). This is a role for a storyteller and an explorer-someone who can make the world (and the universe) make sense to students who learn differently.
Your Responsibilities
- Interdisciplinary Lesson Design: Create "Theme-based" units that combine Science and Humanities-for example, studying the geography of volcanoes alongside the chemical reactions of an eruption.
- Sensory-Rich Delivery: Transform abstract concepts into tangible experiences, using practical experiments for Science and immersive "living history" or mapping projects for Humanities.
- Adaptive Scaffolding: Adapt the KS3/KS4 curriculum into "small-step" objectives that align with EHCP outcomes, ensuring every student experiences the pride of achievement.
- Total Communication: Expertly utilise Makaton, visual symbols, and simplified glossaries to ensure complex scientific and historical vocabulary is accessible to all.
- Positive Co-Regulation: Maintain a low-arousal classroom environment, utilising Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) to help students stay regulated and engaged in their discovery.
- TA Mentorship: Lead a dedicated team of Teaching Assistants, ensuring they are empowered to support 1:1 inquiry and safe practical experiments.
What You'll Bring to the Team
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS): Mandatory. A background in any Science or Humanities subject is welcome, provided you have the flexibility to teach across both.
- SEN Expertise: Proven experience (or a deep desire to learn) how to differentiate secondary subjects for neurodiverse learners.
- Creative Resourcefulness: The ability to move away from textbooks and use hands-on artifacts, outdoor learning, and technology to ignite curiosity.
- Resilient Patience: A calm, steady presence with the emotional intelligence to support students through periods of sensory or emotional dysregulation.
- Compliance: An enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service (or a willingness to process a new one urgently through Randstad).
