Ipswich
Are you a master of de-escalation with a talent for building bridges with "hard-to-reach" learners?
We are seeking a high-impact SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a specialist provision in Ipswich that supports students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. These students are often highly capable but have faced significant barriers to learning. They don't just need a classroom assistant; they need a mentor, a role model, and someone who remains a "calm anchor" even when things get loud. If you have a thick skin, a soft heart, and a relentless "fresh start" mentality, we want to hear from you.
Your Responsibilities
- Crisis Intervention & De-escalation: Use a "low-arousal" approach to spot triggers early and use Team Teach or similar strategies to safely manage challenging behaviour.
- Relationship-Led Support: Build deep, authentic rapport with students who may be skeptical of authority, using their hobbies and interests as a gateway to learning.
- Emotional Literacy Coaching: Work with students on identifying their emotions and developing healthy coping mechanisms, such as using "cool-down" spaces effectively.
- Curriculum Scaffolding: Assist students who have missed chunks of education, breaking down academic tasks to reduce "failure anxiety" and increase confidence.
- Nurture Group Leadership: Facilitate small-group sessions focused on social skills, conflict resolution, and teamwork.
- Detailed Reporting: Maintain objective logs of incidents and progress, providing crucial data for EHCP reviews and pastoral meetings.
What You'll Bring to the Team
- Exceptional Resilience: The ability to remain professional and unphased by verbal or physical outbursts, always offering a "clean slate" the next morning.
- Restorative Justice Mentality: A focus on repairing relationships and learning from mistakes rather than just applying sanctions.
- Proactive Intuition: You can read a room and sense a student's mood shift before a situation escalates.
- Relevant Background: Experience in youth work, PRUs (Pupil Referral Units), residential care, sports coaching, or ex-military/police backgrounds are often highly successful in this environment.
- Compliance: An enhanced Child DBS on the Update Service (or a willingness to process a new one urgently through Randstad).
