About the role
The Senior Data Scientist at Woodside applies domain expertise, scientific acumen, mathematical and statistical proficiency, as well as computing and programming skills to unlock insights from complex datasets to deliver high-impact analytical and machine learning solutions that improve decision-making, optimise operational performance, and drive innovation across the oil and gas value chain. The Senior Data Scientist applies their expertise in scientific methodologies, mathematical modelling, statistical analysis, machine learning (including time-series analytics, anomaly detection, optimisation, computer vision, and neural networks), and computational skills to optimize operations and drive strategic initiatives.
The role is crucial in harnessing the power of data to drive efficiency, innovation, and strategic decision-making in the dynamic and data-rich environment of the oil and gas industry.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with business users, internal stakeholders and Digital teams to apply data science techniques to deliver value across the oil and gas value chain, understanding and shape client requirements, and translating them into Data Science actions
- Translate business questions into analytical problem definitions, assessing feasibility, assumptions, data requirements, and solution pathways.
- Lead end-to-end delivery of data science projects—from problem framing and data exploration through modelling, deployment, and handover.
- Conduct advanced exploratory data analysis, feature engineering, hypothesis testing, and model validation. Evaluate and apply data science concepts and techniques (e.g. predictive modelling, statistical inference, algorithms) to problems in oil and gas exploration and production domains
- Develop and enhance ML models including time-series forecasting, anomaly detection, clustering, classification, regression, OCR/computer vision, and neural networks.
- Utilizing machine learning, artificial intelligence, and data visualization techniques to identify trends, patterns, and anomalies in oil and gas data.
- Apply rigorous statistical and scientific techniques to ensure model robustness, reproducibility, and interpretability.
- Build and deploy ML solutions using AWS services (S3, Lambda, SageMaker, ECS) and data science platforms (Posit/RStudio, JupyterHub).
- Develop applications and APIs (Dash, Streamlit, Flask/FastAPI/Django) to operationalise models and integrate solutions with enterprise systems.
- Monitor and maintain deployed models, ensuring accuracy, reliability, and long-term performance.
- Work with large and complex datasets from operational, engineering, IoT, and cloud-native sources while ensuring data security, governance, and compliance.
- Communicate analytical findings, assumptions, limitations, and recommendations clearly to technical and non-technical audiences, including senior leaders.
- Produce high-quality documentation to support reproducibility, governance, and knowledge transfer.
- Create documentation, develop and improve data science processes and best practices to ensure the sustainability of work.
- Mentor and support junior data scientists through technical guidance, code reviews, and project coaching.
Skills & Experience:
- Min. 5-year proven hands-on practical experience in Data Science, with machine learning (OCR, CV, DNN) and AI methods
- Experience across the full end-to-end process of data science delivery
- Experience with software engineering best practices (e.g. CI/CD principles under Agile Framework, version control, reproducible research, etc.)
- Expert capability in time-series modelling, anomaly detection, clustering, and predictive modelling.
- Familiarity with optimisation, simulation, or scientific modelling frameworks.
- Experience in oil and gas industry and/or the resources sector
- Strong proficiency in Python, including Pandas, NumPy, SciPy, scikit-learn, and at least one deep learning framework (PyTorch or TensorFlow).
- Experience building and deploying analytical or ML applications (Dash, Streamlit, APIs).
- Strong exposure to AWS cloud environments—S3, Lambda, ECS, SageMaker, IAM, serverless computing.
- Strong communication skills, with a track record of presenting insights to business leaders.
- Tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Engineering, or a similar quantitative discipline.
- Experience with project management and prioritization
- Ability to influence business decisions through data
