About the role
The Senior Product Owner is accountable for maximising business and customer value across one or more complex digital products or value streams. Operating as a senior decision‑maker within the product model, this role shapes product outcomes by balancing strategic intent, customer needs, delivery capacity, and long‑term product sustainability.
The role goes beyond backlog management to provide product leadership—partnering closely with Product Managers, senior business stakeholders, architecture, and engineering leaders to ensure product strategy is translated into clear, prioritised, and outcome‑driven delivery. The Senior Product Owner provides strong direction to delivery teams, makes informed trade‑offs at pace, and ensures delivery is aligned to enterprise standards, architectural direction, and strategic objectives.
Through deep product expertise, strong stakeholder influence, and data‑informed decision‑making, the Senior Product Owner enables consistent delivery of high‑quality, user‑centred digital products that deliver measurable business outcomes.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Key responsibilities include:
Product Leadership & Strategy Execution
• Act as the senior authority on product priorities and scope, accountable for value realisation across complex product domains or multiple squads.
• Partner with Product Managers to translate product vision, strategy, and roadmaps into executable delivery plans and outcome‑focused backlogs.
• Shape and influence product direction through proactive engagement with senior stakeholders, ensuring alignment to business strategy and enterprise priorities.
• Apply a systems‑thinking mindset to ensure product decisions consider downstream impacts, technical sustainability, and long‑term value.
Value‑Based Prioritisation & Decision Making
• Own and continuously refine the product backlog, ensuring work is clearly articulated, appropriately sequenced, and aligned to strategic objectives.
• Lead value‑based prioritisation, making complex trade‑offs across scope, risk, cost, time, and technical health to maximise outcomes rather than outputs.
• Make timely, well‑reasoned decisions in ambiguous or high‑pressure situations to maintain delivery momentum.
Delivery Enablement & Agile Excellence
• Provide clear direction and intent to agile delivery teams, ensuring alignment on outcomes, acceptance criteria, and definition of done.
• Work closely with Delivery Leads, Scrum Masters, and Engineering Leads to support predictable, sustainable delivery and continuous improvement.
• Actively identify and address delivery risks, dependencies, and constraints that may impact value delivery.
• Champion disciplined agile practices while adapting ways of working to suit product context and maturity.
Stakeholder & Customer Engagement
• Engage with customers, users, and stakeholders to deeply understand needs, validate assumptions, and shape product outcomes.
• Facilitate effective collaboration between business, technology, UX, and delivery teams, resolving conflicts and aligning expectations.
• Communicate product priorities, progress, and outcomes clearly to senior stakeholders, using evidence and insights.
Outcomes, Insights & Continuous Improvement
• Define and track product success measures, using qualitative and quantitative data to assess performance and inform future prioritisation.
• Ensure quality and release readiness, working with engineering, UX, QA, and architecture to confirm delivered outcomes meet expectations.
• Drive continuous improvement in product practices, backlog health, and value flow across the delivery lifecycle.
• Contribute to uplift of product capability across the organisation through coaching, knowledge sharing, and role modelling best practice.
Skills & Experience:
Experience
• Significant experience as a Product Owner or senior product role within complex, product led digital delivery environments (typically 5+ years).
• Proven track record of owning and leading delivery for complex products, platforms, or value streams involving multiple stakeholders and teams.
• Deep experience operating within Agile delivery models (Scrum, Kanban, or hybrid), with demonstrated ability to adapt practices pragmatically.
• Strong experience in value based prioritisation, outcome definition, and benefits realisation.
• Experience partnering closely with Product Managers, Architects, and Engineering Leads to balance strategic intent with delivery execution.
• Demonstrated experience influencing senior stakeholders and operating effectively in ambiguous or changing environments.
• Advanced experience translating strategy and complex requirements into clear, actionable user stories and acceptance criteria.
• Hands on experience with product and delivery tooling (e.g. Jira or equivalent) and product analytics platforms.
Key Competencies
• Strategic and outcome focused mindset, able to connect day to day delivery decisions to broader business objectives.
• Strong commercial and analytical capability, with the ability to assess trade offs and optimise value.
• Advanced communication and stakeholder management skills, including influencing at senior levels.
• Leadership through influence, coaching, and collaboration rather than direct authority.
• Customer centred and evidence driven approach to decision making.
• High level of resilience, adaptability, and comfort operating in complex, fast paced environments.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
• Agile or product certifications (e.g. CSPO, SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager) are desirable.
• Familiarity with product analytics and experimentation tools is advantageous.
